Careers Education

This policy statement sets out the academy’s arrangements for managing the access of providers to pupils at the academy. This is for the purpose of giving them information about the provider’s education or training offer. This complies with the academy’s legal obligations under Section 42B of the Education Act 1997. The academy is also registered with the Enterprise Advisor Network and has completed the self-assessment compass tool. 
Our academy is committed to ensuring that all pupils have opportunities to access a relevant careers and employability programme. 
Our academy is Gatsby compliant and contributes to the eight benchmarks;
The academy’s Careers programme is embedded throughout the curriculum and is integral to our academy intent to prepare young people for the next phase of education; for a successful return to mainstream education or for their future employment role. The academy has high rates of reintegration and regularly outperforms the national average of similar schools, for the number of pupils who leave in Year 11 for a positive destination. The majority of pupils leaving in Year 11 will move on to a local college.

We work with the Derbyshire Education Business Partnership and the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership to provide further access to independent careers information, education, advice and guidance, and access to local employers.

What does our careers programme consist of?

We offer a weekly timetabled “Futures” lesson to all pupils from year 7 upwards. Our Futures curriculum has been developed to include finance and employability to meet our pupils needs. We feel that these important skills will provide our pupils with the vital tools that they need to become a functional member of society. 

Pupils are exposed to a wide variety of careers over an academic year through their tutor time programme. For example a career in the army was discussed on Armed Forces day.

Some pupils in KS4 who require vocational experiences may have this offer as part of their timetable and for instance attend one day per week in a motor vehicle off site commissioned AP. 
All year 11 pupils are offered one day per week of work experience as part of their timetable. This provides real life experiences in the work place and broadens pupils expertise and skill set in preparation for transitioning to post 16. A large majority of the year 10 pupils may also engage in a regular work experience placement.

All teachers at our academy will be teachers of careers. All subjects will be linked to a future career each half term. This will broaden exposure to a wider variety of possible careers. See the curriculum long term plans.

Pupils undergo mock interview practice organised in conjunction with the D2N2 hub to prepare them for interviews with industry professionals. 

We strongly believe in our careers programme for our pupil’s entitlement to social inclusion.

Provider Access Legislation 
This policy statement sets out the academy’s arrangements for managing the access of careers providers to the academy for the purpose of giving them information about the provider’s education or training offer. This complies with the academy’s legal
obligations under Section 42B of the Education Act 1997.
Pupil entitlement
All pupils in years 8 to 13 are entitled:
• to find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships
opportunities, as part of a careers programme which provides information on
the full range of education and training options available at each transition
point;
• to hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer,
including technical education and apprenticeships – through options events,
assemblies and group discussions and taster events;
• to understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and
technical courses.
For pupils of compulsory school age these encounters are mandatory and there will be a minimum of two encounters for pupils during the ‘first key phase’ (year 8 to 9) and two encounters for pupils during the ‘second key phase’ (year 10 to 11). For pupils in the ‘third key phase’ (year 12 to 13), particularly those that have not yet decided on their next steps, there are two more provider encounters available during this period, which are optional for pupils to attend.

Opportunities for access. Please speak to our Careers Leader to identify the most suitable opportunity for you.
The academy will make a suitable space available for discussions between the provider and pupils, as appropriate to the activity. The academy will also make available ICT and other specialist equipment to support provider presentations. This will all be discussed and agreed in advance of the visit with the Careers Leader.
For some pupils who are dual registered they may receive this information in the mainstream schools.

How do we review our careers programme?

The Futures curriculum content is reviewed annually to meet out pupils needs by the PSD lead for the academy. See Futures Long term plan.
The PSD staff team have departmental meetings half termly to review the content of the careers element of the Futures curriculum.
The PSD lead continually develops the enrichment offer for the academy. Many of these experiences contribute to the progress of a Gatsby Benchmark.

The Careers Lead will formally rate our progress towards the Gatsby Benchmarks 3 times per year. This was last reviewed at the end of the summer term in July 2024. It will next be reviewed in December 2024.  We use Compass+ to provide evidence of our careers programme. In the summer review 
we achieved 100% in 5 Benchmarks and made progress in all other Benchmarks over the year in 23-24.
