Modern British Values

Esteem North Academy believes that British Values are embedded right across the curriculum. Our academy we strive to ensure that our pupils are nurtured and are taught a clear set of values and a sound understanding of tolerance, community cohesion, and have a fundamental understanding of rights and responsibilities.

  • Discrete lessons in PSHRE and Citizenship

  • Topic-led social time

  • Annual one day events involving all key stages: Safer Internet Day, Equalities Day, Black History Month

  • Pupil Ambassadors

  • Every subject intent includes information about how it embeds British values

Our Ethos:

  • Pupils are encouraged to treat others with respect and tolerance

  • Pupils are encouraged to make positive choices about their behaviour, guided by individual targets

Democracy

At Esteem North Academy democracy is taken very seriously. Children are actively encouraged to have a voice and share their views and opinions regularly through various mediums, using the pupil ambassadors, but also in meetings and discussions. Children voice ideas and vote on issues. In addition, mock elections run in PSHRE/Citizenship, with pupils learning how a ballot box works. Tutor time activities embed the skill of debating whilst engaging pupils in topical issues from around the world.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the academy, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout the academy day, as well as when dealing with behaviour and at academy meetings. Children are taught: the value and reasons behind laws; that they govern and protect us; the responsibilities that this involves; and the consequences when laws are broken.

Our Behaviour policy is discussed on induction, referred to regularly and consistently upheld.  Pupils are aware that for inappropriate behaviours, there are consequences. Parents are kept informed of their child’s behaviour. Visits from authorities such as the Police and links with the PCSOs help reinforce this message.

Individual Liberty

Within the academy, children are actively encouraged to make decisions and choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As an academy we educate and provide boundaries for young children to take risks and make choices safely. Children are encouraged to understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms, and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through events such as Safer Internet Day.

In addition, pupils are encouraged to involve themselves within community life. We hold fund raising events, to support local and national organisations.

Mutual Respect

Mutual respect is at the heart of our values; a key expectation that forms part of our ethos. Children learn that their behaviours have an affect on their own rights, and those of others. All members of the academy community are encouraged to treat each other with tolerance and respect.

Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Esteem North Academy sites are situated in areas which are not culturally diverse, therefore we place a great emphasis on promoting diversity with our pupils. We have planned to address this issue either directly or through the inclusion of stories and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures. Our Citizenship and PSHRE teaching, reinforces this.
